THE IDEA

"Grace" by Jean Stryker, oil on canvas, 2007

We tend to view others through prejudices and assumptions based on our life experiences and beliefs.

For instance, my Christian faith teaches me that I have been renewed from the inside out. Because of Christ's gift of grace toward me, God sees me as pure, holy, perfected. But even though I hold this to be true, life experiences of being deceived, or of falling short, or being hurt in some way make it hard for me to see myself and others in light of the teachings of my faith.

The Sacred Eyes Project is my attempt to lay aside my filters and paint people in a way that captures their inherent value, dignity, and beauty. My hope is that the artwork will be a starting place for new understanding between individuals and a catalyst for the surprising adventures that can occur when we discover grace and recognize ourselves in the eyes of another.
